4 Tips on How to Get a Broken Key Out of the Door

You never think it will happen to you. You simply go about your day and return home. Perhaps you’re ready to relax after a long day of work or a hectic day of errands. Whatever the reason, you’re finally home.

You insert your key to unlock the door, turn it, and then there’s the dreaded snap! You now have a broken key. Panic sets in. How could this happen? What do you do?

Worry not; here are 4 methods of extracting that broken key:

We’ll be going in order from the most convenient methods to the least. Not everyone will have access to all these items, but some you’re likely to already have on you, or else they’re easy to retrieve. Other methods are more likely to be a hassle to get.

1.     Tweezers

Inexpensive and likely already on your person, this is a good first method to try. Though they can make a bad situation worse if you’re not very careful. Before using the tweezers ensure that there is an opening wide enough to pinch either side of the broken key.

Though it is a good first method to try, it sadly is the least likely to work. Warding on most keyholes won’t leave enough room to fit the tweezers. This method works best if part of the key is sticking out.

2.     Superglue

This may not be on your person while you’re out, but it is something you could easily get a hold of. As with the tweezer solution, you risk making things worse by jamming the lock.

You’ll need to use something thin and stuff, such as a wire. Apply the glue to the end of it and slip it into the keyhole so the key piece sticks to it. Wait for the glue to dry and very carefully pull it out of the lock.

3.     Key Extractor

This works best if you buy one in advance, though you can find them in most hardware stores. Key extractors are purpose-made to remove a broken key from a lock.

Place the extractor on the “biting end” of the key. From here you should be able to hook onto the key’s teeth. Turn the extractor once it’s hooked and gently pull.

An extractor is the least risky method on this list but does require you to choose the correct extractor type.

4.     Make Your Own Key Extractor

While this is the least convenient of the methods listed, it does allow you to make on to the exact specification for your broken key and lock.

To do this you must use a mini hacksaw to file the metal. Pick a thin piece of metal and file it to match your keys’ teeth, this way it can hook to the exact grooves. This option is likely not going to help you in an emergency unless you have already made it in advance.

Don’t Let a Broken Key Break You

A broken key in a lock is a frustrating experience but it isn’t the end of the world. If you can try any of these methods, you won’t be trapped outside. However, you may want to call a locksmith for a key replacement and likely a lock repair.

King Locksmith can respond to your call in minutes. We’ll set to repairing your lock immediately or removing the broken key pieces should none of these methods work for you. We’ll get your key removed so you can get on with your day.
